Trade union Unison last week staged a confected photo opportunity outside Parliament, following the publication of official statistics indicating the economy shrank by 0.3% in the last recorded quarter.

Dave Prentis, Unison general secretary, said: ‘We need a radical plan for growth, and an end to the tide of job losses damaging the public services that people rely on.'
