Swindon is set to become the first UK town to get free Internet access, under a ground-breaking deal brokered by the council. The town's 186,000 residents will be able to use broadband through a free wi-fi service, with no line rental or connection charge. It has been made possible through a company, Digital City UK, which is a private-public partnership between Swindon Council and IT firm, aQovia. Residents will be able to upgrade to faster broadband – which the firm will charge for – and other services will include home and business security linked to CCTV. Health professionals will be able carry out consultations using telemedicine software. Council leader Rod Bluh said: ‘This is a partnership which will have real benefits for everyone living in Swindon. Not only will residents be able to access the Internet free, the council and its partners will be able to use the technology to provide cutting-edge services to the areas or individuals who need them.' He added: ‘Digital City will also provide the council with a unique funding stream. It is our intention to use our expertise to help other local authorities follow our lead.'
