A Whitehall initiative designed to combat tax credit fraud has delivered encouraging early returns – with almost £11m saved in the first few months, the Cabinet Office has revealed.

A Whitehall initiative designed to combat tax credit fraud has delivered encouraging early returns – with almost £11m saved in the first few months, the Cabinet Office has revealed.

A pilot of data-screening techniques by the Revenue and Customs (HMRC) department between September 2010 and March 2011 delivered sufficient savings to encourage officials to set a new target to deliver total savings of £256m savings over four years, once the system is implanted in full.
