Tax levy on empty buildings 'a heavy burden'

Scottish MPs are told, proposals to levy extra council tax on empty homes will bring undue burdens on councils.

Proposals by the Scottish Government to levy extra council tax on empty homes risks imposing undue administrative and financial burdens on councils, Scottish MPs have been told.

Under measures contained in the Local Government Finance (Unoccupied Properties – Scotland) Bill, additional tax would be charged on houses unoccupied for one year, and a business rates discount of between 50% to 10% could apply to unused commercial properties.
