Tax recovery bid could ease spending cuts

Tax authorities could recover a further £8bn in owed revenue, saving the chancellor from having to make further spending cuts or tax hikes, a trade union representing HM Revenue and Customs managers has claimed.

A fully-costed pre-Budget submission from the Association for Revenues and Customs (ARC) union makes the case for investing an additional £312m to help recoup some of the estimated £13bn lost to indirect taxes and £18.7bn for direct taxes each year.
