The Government has announced plans to give troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan a council tax rebate. Defence secretary, Des Browne, said the troops would receive a £140 flat rate rebate, worth 25% of the average Band D council tax bill. The measures will be introduced from next month, and the first payments will be made in April 2008. ‘It underlines the Government's commitment to support our armed forces and their families,' said Mr Browne.
