Tax sweetener turns sour for Government

Surrey CC and Cambridgeshire CC poised to become the latest authorities to reject Government's cash offer to 'freeze' council tax levels.

Two Conservative counties – Surrey CC and Cambridgeshire CC – are poised to become the latest authorities to reject the Government's cash offer to ‘freeze' council tax levels, it has emerged.

Last November, communities secretary, Eric Pickles, offered English councils a one-off grant – equivalent to a 2.5% funding boost for 2012/13 – if they agreed to extend the council tax freeze by another year.
