Senior tax officials have been told ‘get a grip' over the switch from personal tax credits to the single universal credit (UC), after fresh accounts showed £2.3bn was lost to fraud and error in 2010/11.
Overpayments amounting to up to £2.5bn were made that year, while errors cost some claimants up to £290m, the National Audit Office's (NAO) report on HM Revenue and Customs' (HMRC) accounts for 2011/12 shows.
