A team of senior managers are being made redundant, in a bid to save £200,000. Thirteen senior managers face the axe from Denbighshire Council. Incoming chief executive, Dr Mohammed Mehmet, said he wanted to ‘hit the ground running', and the creation of a new senior leadership team would save the council £200,000 a year. The jobs will be lost from resources, environment, social services, housing, and life-long learning directorates. Dr Mehmet said: ‘We need to see whether we can bring new skills and experience into the organisation at this level. It could be that they already exist, but lower down the staffing structure.' Elsewhere, West Dunbartonshire Council now has the job of telling four apprentices that they will not be taken on, as the council tightens its belt. A Council spokeswoman said: 'A meeting has just been held between management, senior officers and trade union representatives to discuss the termination of employment of four modern apprentices, 3 joiners and 1 plumber. 'The now fully trained and qualified apprentices have come to the end of their four year training contracts with the council and have been aware of their termination date of August, since the beginning of their training programme. 'At present there is no requirement for West Dunbartonshire Council to increase its number of joiners and plumbers and can also confirm that tradesman are not contracted in from external agencies to carry out work in either of these trades. Union Unite has claimed the council failed to consult properly on the decision. But the sector also saw a key appointment this week, with the return of Manny Lewis. Mr Lewis has been appointed managing director at Watford BC. He was previously chief executive of the London Development Agency. He has also worked as a director of corporate services at the Greater London Authority, and was director of human resources and democratic services at Thurrock Council. He said: ‘I am delighted to be offered this role. Watford has a good feel and has made tremendous progress. I look forward to working with everyone to continue the path towards excellence.'
