A funding freeze on Government support for temporary accommodation is draining English district councils of £268m a year, with the average authority losing £1.6m, fresh analysis has revealed.

Based on Housing Forum analysis showing it costs £243,700 to build a house on council land, the £268m shortfall is equivalent to more than 1,100 social homes that could be built annually across district areas alone.
