Supermarket giant Tesco has announced plans for a massive regeneration partnership scheme with Knowsley MBC. The Destination Kirby project, which includes the new Everton football stadium, a Tesco Extra store and 50 other shops will be the largest job-creation plan in the history of the town. Tesco has pledged that half the 700 jobs created in its new store will go to the long-term unemployed from the local area. Over the last decade, Tesco has launched 21 regeneration partnerships across the UK. ‘We have said all along that we will provide jobs for local people, and this is how we are doing it,' said Tesco corporate affairs manager, Michael Kissman. ‘Through this partnership, we will work with unemployed Kirby residents, offer them training, and guarantee every one of them who passes through the training a job in store.' Knowsley MBC cabinet member for culture, leisure and communities, Cllr Eddie Connor, said: ‘This is good news for Kirby. It shows that the jobs created by this project will go to those who need them most, the long-term unemployed from the local area.'
