One wonders if communities secretary Eric Pickles felt slightly short-changed, present-wise, given the lack of cash kicking around the sector in advance of his 60th birthday celebration last week. But the man who prides himself on his still-strong connections with grass-roots Tories, should remember that the good people of the Kensington and Chelsea Conservative Association are more than able to fork out for at least one more celebratory curry and beer evening.
