Tighter auditing measures urged for schools

Tighter local audit arrangements for free schools and academies are needed to stop embezzlement says a teacher's trade union.

The increasing numbers of academies and free schools should be subject to tighter local audit arrangements to prevent opportunist embezzlement, a teachers' trade union has warned.

Hank Roberts, president of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) said abuse and theft of funds is more widespread than anyone suspects, and will amount to many million pounds of public money.
