Town halls 'more effective at fighting fraud'

According to a report by the Audit Commission, councils in England have become 'more efficient and effective' at fighting fraud.

Councils in England have become ‘more efficient and effective' at fighting fraud, detecting around 3,000 more cases in 2011/12 than the previous year, according to a report by the Audit Commission.

The value of detected fraud against English local authorities decreased by 3%, however, from £185m to £179m. The Audit Commission estimates fraud targeting just local government costs £2.3bn every year in total.
