Transport secretary Alistair Darling has approved funding to build a new bridge across the River Mersey. Mr Darling has given Halton Council £209m – consisting of an £86m grant and £123m worth of PFI credits – for the £305m Mersey Gateway project to create a new crossing between Widnes and Runcorn.
