Parents of primary schoolchildren who play truant could have child benefit payments docked at source under a proposed government crackdown, after official figures revealed 400,000 pupils missed 15% of their schooling a year.
Under measures outlined in an independent Department for Education review, head teachers could levy a £60 penalty on parents who allow their children to miss school without a valid reason.
