They say Yorkshire is God's own country. And the folk of Kirklees certainly seem blessed by heavenly miracle. While residents of London were scrambling from deli to street market to obtain even a single tomato during the current shortages residents of the West Yorkshire borough were given a heads-up by their town hall: head to Dewsbury Market. So, as Londoners clambered over each other to grab the last box of on-the-vine Tomato Pomadoro Roma Nano, prices soared to gold bullion levels and environment secretary Theresa Coffey advised panicked shoppers to eat tasteless turnips instead, Dewsbury's market goers calmly re-stocked. And so Kirklees MBC's cheeky officials joked: ‘There's no shortage of tomatoes or any other fresh produce at Dewsbury Market – come and fill your baskets. Turnips also available.'
