As I write this the Prime Minister has just announced that the NHS budget will increase by £20bn – 3.4% a year in real terms – by 2023.
Leaving aside the fact that suggesting the deal could be funded by a ‘Brexit dividend' was not her finest hour, the announcement has been met with widespread support confirming the political power that our National Health Service continues to command. It stands in sharp contrast to our social care system, which celebrates its seventieth birthday at the same time but hasn't come in for a similar funding windfall.
