Union blues

Andrew Forrest reflects on figures indicating trade union membership levels in the public sector continue to fall.

BIS (the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills) has published the latest figures on Trade Union membership for 2013.

Interestingly, this fall comes in spite of a rise in memberships in the private sector, which has seen an increase of 61,000 to 2.6 million this year, particularly in the Finance and Insurance, Transport & Storage and Arts, Recreation & Entertainment sectors. However, it is the public sector trade union membership levels that have created this overall downturn, dropping by 100,000 to 3.8 million
