Union rejects Neill's claims over 'unsustainable' LGPS

Local government minister, Bob Neill, this week came under fire for describing the £140bn Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) as ‘unsustainable’, ahead of Treasury approved talks with trade unions on the future of the retirement plan.

Local government minister, Bob Neill, this week came under fire for describing the £140bn Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) as ‘unsustainable', ahead of Treasury approved talks with trade unions on the future of the retirement plan.

The GMB trade union representing local authority staff said Mr Neill – who is effectively the LGPS regulator – had been ‘irresponsible' in using such language ahead of talks designed to ensure an affordable retirement plan remained a key tenet of local government's benefits package.
