Frontline workers at Glasgow City Council are poised for industrial action over overtime payments. Public service unions the GMB and T&G Scotland are both balloting members to strike, after the council revealed plans to cut overtime and Sunday pay rates from double or time-and-a-half to single time pay as part of equal pay arrangements. GMB public services spokesman, Alex McLuckie, said: ‘Our members are saying they do not wish to work overtime without some kind of premium payment. ‘We are balloting members for industrial action and the results are due on 18 April. ‘The T&G is also balloting its members.' The cut in overtime payments is being introduced by the council as part of its bid to meet single status arrangements. It claims the new system will provide a fair overtime rate for all staff across the board. But staff, including refuse collectors, grave-diggers and road workers, say the new system could leave them out-of-pocket by thousands of pounds. Mr McLuckie said the GMB was still willing to talk to the council, if it could ‘convince us the negotiations would be meaningful and might resolve the dispute.' A Glasgow spokeswoman said the council was not aware of any planned industrial action.
