Whitehall trade unions are fronting an appeal against a High Court decision allowing ministers to switch the up-rating index for pensions and benefits – warning the change could slash the value of civil service retirement pots by up to 25%.
The unions also claim that introducing the measure to private sector pensions – as planned – would mean that almost all UK employees' pension pots would be hit, leading to a heavier reliance on the benefits system in retirement. They warned that would place the welfare system under greater pressure.
