Trade unions are gearing up for a campaign of co-ordinated strikes this autumn, as they continue to wrangle with the Government over pay. The public sector's biggest union, Unison, is one of four to table a motion at next week's TUC conference in Brighton, demanding the TUC's ruling council co-ordinate strike plans. A Unison spokeswoman said: ‘It is something we think might make action more effective.' The union staged co-ordinated 24-hour action with Unite in July, when more than 500,000 town hall employees went on strike. Now Unison is looking to join forces with the National Union of Teachers, the University and College Union, and the Public and Commercial Services Union to drive home its message over pay. In a joint statement issued on Monday to all council chief executives, the unions said they were committed to an employment package ‘which is fit for the future, with positive industrial relations, and high-quality and efficient local services'.
