Unitary decision time for Cheshire

Local authorities in Cheshire look set to learn their fate this week as rumours spread that the Government will make a decision over unitary status.

Ministers were expected to make an announcement yesterday (Wednesday), after The MJ went to press.

The decision will end months of campaigning by both districts and the county about the future of Cheshire. ‘We are anticipating a government announcement on local government reorganisation for Cheshire this week,' said Ellesmere Port and Neston BC leader, Justin Madders.

‘This week's announcement is expected to confirm two unitaries as its final decision.

‘This will be excellent news for the people of Cheshire, who can look forward to real and positive change in the way local government services are delivered,' added Cllr Madders.

Congleton BC has decided to continue with its legal battle against reorganisation.
