The new universal credit welfare system is to be trialled across Tameside, Oldham, Wigan and Warrington from April next year – six months earlier than planned.

Up to 1,500 new claimants in the areas are expected to take up the new single benefit, which aims to simplify the current welfare system and is scheduled to be rolled out nationally from October next year.
