'Unsustainable' budget cuts have hit local scrutiny 'at a critical time'

A leading charity has warned council scrutiny committees have suffered 'worrying and unsustainable' budget cuts.

Council scrutiny committees have suffered ‘worrying and unsustainable' budget cuts of around 20% over the last five years, a leading charity has warned.

The Centre for Public Scrutiny (CfPS) warned the committees' current predicament could be even worse because its latest figures reflected 2010/11 budgets – agreed prior to the general election – and were compiled before more recent austerity measures.
