A sacked Wakefield City Council worker has been handed an out-of-court settlement after losing his job because he could not wear a compulsory anti-stab vest. Unison claimed the council failed in its duty to find Jack Coulson alternative employment. The vests were introduced after neighbourhood patroller Mr Coulson and a colleague were attacked while on duty. But following a breast cancer operation, Mr Coulson was left with considerable scar tissue, leaving him unable to wear the vest. The council terminated his contract on the grounds of capability. The day before his contract was due to expire, the council offered Mr Coulson a job as an HGV driver. On arrival at the depot, he was informed there had been a mistake, and the position available was as a litter picker. A council spokesman said: ‘This is a personal issue and it would be wrong of the council to disclose personal and confidential issues about this member of staff.'
