Barking and Dagenham LBC has called on home secretary, Theresa May, to ban marches in the borough, following escalating tensions between far right extremists and local members of the Muslim community.

Violent protest organised by the English Defence League (EDL) has centred on an Islamic cultural centre in Green Lane, Barking, for which planning consent has been granted. An EDL march from Redbridge to Green Lane resulted in a violent attack on two Muslim residents living on the route, one of whom went to hospital.
