Local government experts have warned the £250m additional funding for weekly bin collections – announced by communities secretary, Eric Pickles, last week – ‘misses the point' and risks making the Government look ‘a little eccentric'.

Some experts suggested the money could be better spent elsewhere, while others claimed alternate collections for food and recycling waste were more efficient and boosted recycling rates.
