A £700m waste PFI project for Wakefield City Council hangs in the balance, after engineering company, Babcock, revealed it was seeking to quit the sector.

The firm is the preferred bidder for the 180,000t facility with the local authority, but Babcock's latest interim management statement, which was published last week, revealed that the company was now in discussions with the authority about ‘exit opportunities'.
