Spending watchdogs have sought to allay fears of 'mission creep' in their work scrutinising the work of local government.

A Local Government Association briefing, issued ahead of Wednesday's second reading of the Local Audit and Accountability Bill, urged that a cap should be placed on the number of National Audit Office (NAO) studies, because of the burdens they impose on councils.
