The ~Western Isles Council~ was left with the unpleasant task of removing a 47ft rotting whale carcass washed up on one of its beaches this week. At one stage, the council had considered blowing up the badly decomposed sperm whale because it was wedged between rocks. But on Monday night the whale was eventually removed using a crane and transported to a tip on the Isle of Lewis. The Scottish Executive will foot the estimated £5,000 bill for the disposal.
