In the last few days there has been a debate about the number and validity of Twitter followers. Some celebrities claim to have millions of followers. The greater the number, the more influence one is said to have. At an estimated 30 million followers Lady Gaga is a very influential person.
But the debate does raise the question of the value of one’s name. The value of a senior leader’s name will not be the number of Twitter followers she or he may have (many will be naturally averse to such forms of communication). Rather, it may be the extent to which their name and reputation are able to exert influence on the organisation they lead when they’re not even in the room.
