What’s this obsession with libraries? I never use one. Most blokes I know don’t. None of my neighbours do.As far as I can see, the only people who visit libraries are there to keep warm, or are old and bored, or are all three. If I want to read a book, which isn’t very often, I’ll buy one in a bookshop. It costs £7, and that’s before discounts.I don’t see the point of libraries. If they’re supposed to be educating us masses, then they’ve missed the point. The shelves are full of crime novels or biographies of sports personalities. You can buy the same books in Smiths at half price. And libraries rent CDS and DVDs of Hollywood fi lms. Why? I can subscribe to LoveFilm.com for £100 a year and get to see all the new releases. Why do you need a library storing stale old movies on a shelf for years on end? And anyway why should the taxpayer have to pay for someone to read a book for nothing, or take out a discount DVD when they can easily get all that in the high street? If all these library-users in their cardigans love their libraries so much, then let them pay £150 a year for ‘em.The fact is, there are loads of bookshops and online DVD retailers doing the same job.The real problem is that people who go to libraries don’t want to pay for anything themselves, and expect people like me to cough up for their free books and DVDs.Those days are over… if you want a library, pay for it yourself, otherwise, shut them down... and anotherthing...
