Where did this idea come from that anyone working in the public sector is only there out of charity and that, actually, they could be earning shedloads more if they were working in the private sector?I’ve never heard such garbage. It’s always mentioned whenever the subject of pensions comes up as in ‘the only reason I work in this underpaid council job as an out-reach health community safety liaison officer is because I’ve got a sense of public duty and, the way, I was expecting a nice index-linked pension guaranteed by the taxpayer… otherwise I’d have got a job in the private sector, it always needs out-reach community safety liaison officers.’The fact is that half the staff in the public sector wouldn’t last two days working for a private company, which is why they’re in the public sector in the first place. They’re not there ‘cos they’re charity workers, doing their bit for the nation’s poor, they’re there ‘cos it’s a bleeding cushy number, right down to their index-linked taxpayer-guaranteed pensions, and bad luck for them we can’t go on funding their lifestyle anymore.Welcome to the real world, I say, and if they don’t like it, then come and join the private sector, I think they’ll be in for one hell of a shock… and another thing…
