I blame that Thatcher woman. She was the one what privatised our electricity, gas and water, handing it over to city slickers who ever since have taken us customers for a long ride. Now you need a PhD in advanced maths just to understand the bills. They deliberately make it complicated so you don't realise they're fleecing you, sending the money back to their foreign shareholders. Is that what Maggie wanted, seeing all these fat cat foreigners making a mint out of flogging our own water to us? There was nothing wrong with gas, electricity and water being run by the state. At least if they overcharged you it was going back into your pocket down the line. OK the workers may have been useless, overpaid, over-unionised, lazy and inefficient, and if you wanted your boiler fixed you had to stay in all day from 8am until 6pm on the off chance they might turn up. And it's true their managers couldn't run a whelk staff and all retired at 50 and made even civil servants look energetic but at least they worked for us, not for some Aussie mining company. If you did an opinion poll on whether the fat cat energy and water companies should be nationalised I bet there'd be a big majority saying yes. One of them would be me and I don't even vote Labour. In fact, I find even the Tories too socialist but when it comes to the energy companies I say string ‘em up and take ‘em over…
