We need more women leaders in the sector

Heather Jameson says local government still has a woeful record on diversity, equality and representation, but provides a snapshot of the powerful women leading the sector.

Last week, the women of local government had their voices heard – a shamefully rare phenomenon in a sector dominated by men at the top, but populated by women workers at the lower levels.

The Fawcett Society and LGiU released their report, Does Local Government Work for Women? The short answer is no. Local government still has a woeful record when you look at the numbers of women in senior managerial and political roles.
