Children in care want the choice between being at boarding school or with foster families, according to a new government report. More than 12,000 young people were quizzed on the Government's plans to overhaul the care system for the Green Paper Care matters. The young people also called for social workers to spend more time with them and for local authorities to have a council for children so they can hear their views. ‘The recent publication is a collation of consultation responses, not the Government's response,' said Association of Directors of Children's Services joint president, John Freeman. A White Paper, which will outline the Government's proposals for the care system, will be published later this year. Pilot programmes will be run throughout the country to test some of the key proposals. ‘The mark of a decent society is how it treats the most vulnerable,' said education secretary, Alan Johnson. ‘For too long, children in case have not had the support and opportunities they need to turn their lives around.'
