Attracting and developing talented people is crucial for local government

In her final column for The MJ before her retirement, Gill Kneller says attracting and developing talented people will remain essential for local government – 'and "growing our own" talent is one of the most important things any organisation can do'.

As I prepare to retire this June and am writing my final column, I have found myself reflecting on what a career in local government leadership has taught me. 

It has been both a privilege and a responsibility. It asks you to balance public expectations, organisational resilience, political nuance and the very human realities behind every decision. I certainly do not claim to have all the answers, but a few lessons will stay with me.
