After a decade in private sector consultancy, I was warned local government would be slow, bureaucratic and frustrating. What I found arriving as director for transformation and strategy at North Northamptonshire Council was something very different – and far more meaningful.

On the first morning in my new job, I got up, had breakfast with my family, and drove half an hour to the office. After 10 years touring the length and breadth of the country, this simple routine felt like a luxury.
