Budget: The effects on combined and strategic authorities

Tiffany Cloynes looks at at the financial implications of the Budget for combined authorities and strategic authorities. She says that while the introduction of longer-term funding arrangements will allow more freedom for leaders to make strategic decisions, ideally there needs to be longer term certainty and fiscal reform.

The Chancellor's announcements in last week's Autumn Budget would see significant changes in the funding of Combined Authorities and Mayoral Strategic Authorities. 

Government remains committed to rolling out integrated settlements and has confirmed £13bn of Spending Review funding via integrated settlement from 2026-2027 to 2029-2030 for the seven Mayoral Strategic Authorities (MSAs) being Greater Manchester, West Midlands, Liverpool City Region, West Yorkshire, North East, South Yorkshire and the Greater London Authority.
