Council chief executives have been urged to step up their involvement in child protection cases. The head of the Children and Family Court Advisory Support Service (Cafcass) gave unequivical support to councils following the Baby P case. Anthony Douglas, Cafcass chief executive, said: ‘The call for heads to roll is not always the right thing, even if it appears inevitable to restore public confidence. ‘Child protection work is among the toughest in the public sector. It is also the most criticised. Put the two together and a hard job becomes even harder.' But, he added: ‘While directors of children's services have the statutory accountability, chief executives need to be equally involved, working together.'
