The local audit system is out of ‘intensive care' but still in ‘high dependency', the Government's preferred candidate to chair the newly created Local Audit Office (LAO) has told MPs.

Speaking at a Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee hearing into his candidature for the role, Bill Butler said the position had ‘stabilised on the back of the statutory deadlines, which has cleared the backlog' of unaudited accounts at councils.
