Could they be a contender?

If Reform-controlled authorities prove dysfunctional or obstructive will that erode trust in both devolution and local government? Can their administrations maintain internal cohesion, asks Jack Shaw.

Reform UK's unexpected success in the recent local elections marks a significant shift in England's sub-national political landscape.

The party now controls 10 local authorities and holds minority administrations in Warwickshire, Leicestershire and Worcestershire, putting it in charge of services for nearly 10 million people. When combined with the powers of Reform's newly-elected mayors in Hull & East Yorkshire and Greater Lincolnshire, the influence is even greater – managing at least £9.5bn in public spending and serving nearly one in five people in England.
