Councils defy party lines on election delays

Council leaders have strayed from party lines over proposals to delay local elections.

Conservative and Lib Dem-run authorities are among those requesting postponement of May's polls following an invitation by the Labour Government.

The requests come despite Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey suggesting delays would breach human rights laws and Conservative shadow local government minister Paul Holmes claiming voters were being ‘denied the right to elect their own representatives'.
