Let's design a future that champions local identity

The danger remains that reorganisation will result in remote councils and simply consolidate administrative structures without reforming the services local authorities exist to deliver, says Sam Chapman-Allen.

Officers and members at district and county councils, and some unitaries, have worked tirelessly over the course of this year devising plans to reorganise local government.

There is much still to do before most of us submit final proposals. And then there's the even greater challenge of implementing plans and capitalising on the opportunity to bring about lasting change.
