Designing a better framework for public scrutiny

For participation and oversight over council finances, we need to get behind Research for Action's call to make council budget and monitoring data widely available and support residents to engage with it, says Tracy Bingham.

I recently met with Research for Action (RFA), which is collaborating with the University of Sussex on a project called ‘making council budgets accessible'. The conversation was insightful and stayed with me.

As a section 151 officer, it's made me reflect on the role, and ask are we really doing enough to make financial information meaningful and accessible to the people whose lives are impacted by the numbers?
