Fixing social care's AI conflicts

Social workers’ use of AI transcription tools can bring important benefits, but current safeguards are not sufficient to prevent harm to people who draw on care, says Oliver Bruff.

AI transcription tools have sprung up rapidly in the public sector. Local authorities have quickly adopted these technologies for social care in the context of significant resource constraints and a government with an ambitious agenda for public sector reform.

Keir Starmer has described AI as a ‘golden opportunity' and unveiled a new mantra for the public sector: ‘No person's substantive time should be spent on a task where digital or AI can do it better, quicker and to the same high quality and standard.'
