Giving the public a seat at the table on AI decision

Nesta’s research proves that when people are given more context about specific AI tools and their use cases, the public’s fears about AI can transform into more pragmatic criticism, says Kathy Peach.

2025 was supposed to mark the start of an AI transformation in public services. The Government's ‘AI Opportunity' goals were clear: integrate AI to find efficiencies and productivity gains and become a global AI leader. But while the technology might be ready, the ‘social license' to use it is missing.

Our recent polling shows the UK public is deeply divided: 41% view the use of AI in the public sector as ‘dangerous or unproven', compared to just 29% who see it as transformative. People are most worried about algorithmic over-reliance (45%), inaccuracy and data privacy.
