Almost nine in 10 grey belt developments approved by the Government rather than councils over the last year involve ‘unspoilt rural landscapes', countryside campaigners have warned.

The Government's grey belt planning policy was introduced in December, but a report by countryside charity CPRE found that 88% of homes across 13 grey belt developments of 10 or more properties approved by government planning inspectors will be ‘built on previously undeveloped countryside'.
